Eight years ago my dad was laid off. My mom went to work, and my dad has done many odds and ends things since then. He tried and applied for many jobs over those years, and hardly anyone would even interview him. It was rough.
In the meantime, my brother grew tired of his job. He had a great job, with great pay, but never saw his family. He decided to make a change, and left. He was in finance, but is now enrolled to go to Dental School this Fall. Over the years Isaac, and his wife Kristin have been trying to convince my parents to move to Denver to be closer to them, and to start over.
That couldn't really happen, and my dad needed a job. So Isaac put his finance brain to work, and bought a business with my dad! The business is a pet crematorium! Colorado Pet Cremation Services is theirs. My dad is working again, and is really busy with it. The business is growing, thanks to Isaac's brain, and they recently hired my mom.
You can imagine how fun it is to explain to people, old friends, new friends, and family - What on earth they are doing! The really fun part has been hearing our kids explain it to people. Especially Isaac's five year old son Jake, and my five year old son Harrison. It is very interesting to view the family business through their eyes.
I took Bennett and Harrison on a trip to Denver in January. One of our days was spent checking out the Pet Crematorium. Harrison fully understood that Grandpa was burning dead dogs, and he was not sure how to handle the information. Bennett understood to some degree, because he pointed right into the fire and said, "Doggy."
A salesman came to the door the other day. Isaac and the boys answered. Isaac listened for a few seconds and then explained how he is a student, has no job, we have no money etc.... Right in the middle of his schpeel, Jake announces "My dad burns dead animals." The person's eyes about popped out.
They then had to have a talk on when it is appropriate to share about the business!
We had the missionaries from our church over for dinner. The new Elder, whom we had not met yet, was from Price, Utah. I asked the kids if they remembered driving through Price. Lily was the only one! It was almost 2 years ago. We drove through there on our way from Denver to Salt Lake City. I said that we would be making that same trip in a few months. The missionaries asked why, and I told them that my parents live in Denver. Then Harrison blurted out, "My grandpa fires Dead DOGS!" The missionaries almost choked on their food - mostly from trying not to laugh with food in their mouth. They know and love Harrison's crazy dinner behavior.
I'm thinking it's time we also have a conversation about when it is appropriate to share about the 'business.'
